Food Fanatic

February is upon us and there are birds chirping annoyingly through the night, I think there may be a nest on my roof ! The rabbits have reappeared at work late at night and  its still chilly as it should be. A few things still on the horizon, nights out but only one trip so far 😦 Lots to think about for later in the year.. just to cheer me up I got my new navy blue non EU passport. 😢

Wise Words 2024

Those of us who are on Twitter ( I will always call it that) Facebook a other social media and sources of communication will continually see memes with words of wisdom, age old phrases and things your parents taught you. These are a few I have seen this year

Wines 2024

Every one who knows me  knows I like a glass of wine or more.  I am a member of Naked Wines or an Angel as we are called. They have an amazing selection of wines produced by smaller vineyards throughout the world. The wines are updated when required and members can pay into their account monthly or just buy on demand. I have even had some Californian wines which were all amazing and nothing like much of the cheap varieties sold by the barrowload in high st supermarkets. My other sources are Aldi and Lidl which also have a great selection of wines which are different from other supermarkets.  Sometimes the wines are in short supply and never seen again. A £7 bottle can be very superior to a popular  brand of the same price in other stores

Wow 2024

I had a few lovely mini breaks away last year and there's were a few stunning locations. The Acropolis was another one ticked off my bucket list. There was also a day trip to the Guadalest water falls and village while in Spain visiting friends.  It's well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Glasgow

Andre and Margo

I had a great weekend out in Glasgow, just for one night but managed to fit in some great food and an another item ticked off my bucket list. Andre Rieu was the main event and well worth it. What a fabulous show. We had booked a meal at the Spanish Butcher but not once but twice managed to book us in to the Edinburgh one. I’m still confused! Anyway we hot footed it along the street to our favourite Indian eatery in town. Green Gates Cafe, check previous posts for details. The food there was lovely as always. The Lamb Kadhai is fabulous. We headed out to the Hydro for Andre Rieu extravaganza, it didn’t disappoint. On our way back to the hotel we stopped nearby our failed trip earlier we stopped for a beverage in the Spiritualist. The staff upgraded us to the posh rose as the standard one was out of stock which was a wee bonus. The next day after a full breakfast at the hotel we headed back down the same street from the previous days mistake and to MARGO for an early lunch. This was a recommendation and well worth the visit. The menu consisted of small plates, cold dishes, hot dishes and puddings. We must had a few between us as it was so early for lunch. We had the fresh focaccia with butter and garlic confit. It was the best I have ever had 100%. So good we had more. We had the ham hock croquettes which were also excellent. I had the beef tartare which I always have if it’s on the menu. It didn’t disappoint. The crispy potato combined with the melt in the mouth beef perfectly. My friend had the rainbow trout which was perfect she said. Washed down with a glass of rose and a lot of water which was definitely needed after the previous day.

Edinburgh

The Real  Greek

We had a relatively calm day in town as my pal was just down for the day. The usual plan being shopping drinks and food but on a smaller scale. We opted for some lunch in the magnificent St James Quarter. We went to The Real Greek which is part of a small chain with restaurants throughout the UK. Food from Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean is served. There's a wide range of meze, grills, gyros and seafood on offer. There is a varied drinks list with beers, wines and cocktails and alcoholic free options.

The have the option of a 500ml carafe of wine which is great for lunch time, we had the Greek Rose  which was reminiscent  of French Provencal ones.

We had a selection of meze to begin with, it was supposed to be a starter we thought but the mains arrived shortly after, it didn’t really matter as it turned  out as they were meze size as well. We had houmous, spicy feta dip and fava to start. Fava is blended yellow lentils with herbs and spices topped with a salsa of tomato, onion and capers. Those who know me know that I am not a huge fan of lentils. This was very tasty however. The spicy feta was a blend of feta and red pepper with some chilli. It was  definitely a bit spicy !. Following that I had the Calamari with was delicious but the portion could have been a bit bigger for the price. My friend had the salt cod which were lovely but again the portion was a little small. All round it was lovely and worth a visit if you are wanting a quick bite to eat while out shopping. Minor quibble was the fries which arrived cold but swiftly changed for fresh ones.

The day the proceeded with the obligatory Porn Star Martini in the Harrods Beauty shop though they call it a Passion Fruit Martini! A bit  more browsing round the shops before my friend hot footed it back up the road to Dundee. All in all a very pleasant day out.

Dundee

Gidi Grill

Had a flying visit to Broughty Ferry recent to see my travel buddy and go to the Wet Wet Wet concert at the Caird Hall which is a fabulous venue for smaller concerts and has a great atmosphere. Prior to this we went to the Gidi Grill which is a great restaurant serving Caribbean and African food. It's owned by Eniola and Mo who settled in the city 20 years ago while at university from Nigeria. It has moved to larger premises in city square right beside the Caird Hall.  It was fairly quiet when we went in at 5pm but soon filled up with pre concert goers and had a lively atmosphere. We started off with the obligatory cocktail. They didn’t have my default choice of Porn Star Martini so I had my back up option of Classic Mojito which was very tasty and a definite hit of Bacardi. This was followed up with grilled marinated 1/2 roast chicken for her and BBQ grilled marinated chicken for myself. Both were perfectly cooked and the ideal amount of tasty BBQ  marinade. Served with home fries, salad and extra sauces of jerk BBQ and BBQ. We had a bottle of Rose to accompany as you do.

Theatre Night. Spit Spot.

My usual partner in crime and other shenanigans headed off to the theatre for some much needed hilarity and enjoyment. Mary Poppins at the Festival theatre in Edinburgh. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and fantastic evening. The theatre was preceded by some food and drink as always. We went to the bar at the #Scotsman Hotel. The Scotsman is situated in the stunning and historic building where the Scotsman newspaper was published from. The wine was lovely, the surroundings stunning but the service didn't match up unfortunately apart from the super efficient and personable host. Off we went to Mother India a short hop from the theatre. Its a lovely well run restaurant offering tapas style Indian food ideal for a pre or post theatre meal.

We shared dishes of Aloo chat, potato cakes with chutneys and yoghurt, Butter chicken and an extremely tasty haddock baked in Punjabi spices. All accompanied with garlic nan and pilau rice.  A well recommended go to place near the theatre..

Lyon

So a few months ago I was perusing Sky scanner, as you do, looking for a cheap getaway over the Christmas period. I must admit I had had a glass of wine but only enough to make me feel enthusiastic. This was the result. Ideally a few nights in Lanzarote or Madeira would have been better for some heat but hey ho. Si the result was a full on 48 hours in the gastronomic capital of France. I made the most of it with a race round a handful of museums. My first night was cold and wet, but it's January so not unusual. It did dry up a bit so I sat outside this bar restaurant for a glass of Macon Village Blanc, I even remembered my French which I hadn't used in a long time. I then went to find some food. One place which looked really traditional had no room. I think the fact that I looked cold, wet and bedraggled may also have been a factor. So I trotted off down to a cosy bar down the road where I demolished a sharing board for 2 without any bother at all. The baked camembert was amazing. I then had a pit stop at a rather trendy bar further up the street. It all felt French ( as it should) Not another tourist in sight, just the locals enjoying the last of their Christmas holidays. Day 2 was very hectic but gave my daily steps a real boost. The Cinema and Miniature museum which houses sets and props from numerous Hollywood and French films. The Gardagne marionette museum and the Fine art museum. All of which were located close to each other in the Old Town. All this followed an old town walking tour and interspersed with food and drink as usual and the now obligatory visit and purchase from Zara. I go to a Zara in every new city I visit just for fun. some of the museums were in the more touristy part of the old town so it was quite busy. It's pretty small considering the size of the city. I had a lovely Lyonaise salad in a small bistro. Lyonaise salad is dressed mixed leaves, lardons and croutons, Simple but delicious. Later on I had Steak tartare but I think there was something lost in translation as I got a blue steak burger with the egg yolk as required. Maybe they thought I didnt know what I was ordering or maybe the chef thought I wanted a burger before realising his mistake. Any way a cocktail and another couple of glasses of re and it was back to the hotel.  Day 3 and its back home. I walked to the station via the Paul Bocuse food market which is very posh an Galeries Laffyette.

Christmas 2024 Fun times

The Polar Ice bar and other establishments

Christmas is very hectic so booking is recommended well in advance to get into the establishment of your choice. Here are a few of mine.  Ones I have been to before and vey good and busy. The Polar Ice bar, a temporary event just for the Christmas season. Its literally all ice, even the cocktails were served in ice cups. We had 2 cocktails as we only had a 30 minute slot. Christmas Ciroc Cosmo and a Spiced apple Ciroc Cosmo. both very tasty. Tiger Lily  and The Abbotsford are go to places when out with one of my friends. The Abbotsford is a proper traditional pub while Tiger Lily as a bit more swanky and trendy, good for prosecco and cocktails. Gusto and Amarone are both Italian, part of small groups. We went with the shared mixed platter which is always a winner and the veal  ( Don't judge me!)  The veal was a little disappointing but the restaurant is generally very good so don't let that put you off.  We had a Christmas martini which was excellent and a pistachio cannoli which was lovely to finish.  Not quite as spectacular and the ones in actual Italy but very nice all the same. In Amarone the following week we had one of the best bruschetta's ever. Toasted sourdough with marinated tomatoes, oregano and ricotta. Sublime!. Following that My friend had Seafood pasta which I am assured was fabulous and I had the chicken Milanase with was very tasty if not predictable. Moving on we had the obligatory cocktail. Espresso Martini and a Negroni. I really need to get out and drink a few Negronis for research purposes

Louise and Jane on tour. Spain 24

Completely bonkers few days in Spain to round off the year. Nothing out standing to eat but still lovely food, The rest was spent having a blast with new friends and old. Managed to have some nice tapas and wine on the first  evening though. It would be rude not to

Birthday 24

Fishers in the City

I was taken out by the family for an amazing meal to the Edinburgh institution that is Fishers. We went to the one in the city which was excellent as always. We all opted for seafood or fish. Highlights were the Mussels and Lobster. The King Scallops were yummy but I could have easily eaten more for the money!  Perfectly cooked food all round and impeccable and professional service.

 Night oot!

Broughty Ferry

I had a very enjoyable evening out recently in The Ferry with my favourite pal. After the usual mooch around TKmaxx and the local shops we headed for an evening of cocktails and food. The usual venue of the Bruach is highly recommended and very busy so booking is  highly recommended.  We opted for our favourites of  Prosecco and Porn Star Martinis.  After this we headed off to a local favourite Sol  Y Sombra a fabulous  tapas restaurant which has been taken over recently and a brilliant as ever.  It’s a set meal with a vegetarian option. It consists of  10 tapas a mixture of hot and cold,d with bread and olives. The manchego with quince paste and the skewers with chorizo, peppers and morcilla are the best I have ever had. All washed down with some chilled rose. Afterwards we headed to the local karaoke where it was packed to the rafters and everyone was belting out Sunshine on Leith..

Harvey Nicks 4th Floor Brasserie

My friend and I had a typical girls night day out for us starting off with a flying visit to Ikea and TKMaxx before heading into town. Cocktails at Harrods then onto Harvey Nichols for dinner.  HN have an excellent seasonal fixed price menu on all the time. 3 courses and a cocktail. We opted for this rather than the a la carte which is also very good.  We were given a window seat which offers fabulous views of the city and a wee look over the Forth into Fife. Our cocktail was gin based  Malfy and Missoni with elderflower and grapefruit. It was a new one for me but very tasty. My friend had the Cullen Sink with isle of Mull cheddar and foccacia toast which she said was wonderful.  I had the warm pear, apple  and stilton tart with candied walnut and pickled beetroot. Classic combo and delicious. To follow we both had the Borders pork belly on a bed of soy noodles and vegetables. It was lovely but was missing something to really pack a punch Puddings were amazing. Ice cream for my friend and a Plum and bramble clafoutis for myself with vanilla ice cream.

Our choice of wines were a glass of Provence Rose and Languedoc Red! { Not just one glass obviously}

Friday Night Ooot

Memed  Barbeque

Myself and my companion were on a night out at the theatre An evening with the cast of Still Game at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh. So we decided to go for some food first. This restaurant came highly recommended and was close to the venue so we gave it a whirl. It was absolutely fantastic food. Very authentic. As served in Turkish reastaurants everywhere else. We had a mixed Mezze starter and to follow I had a mixed lamb and chicken shish and my companion had a chicken shish. The starter had a selection of warm Turkish bread , pastry stuffed with Turkish cheese, Halloumi, hummus, yoghurt, olives and other goodies. The kebabs came with roasted peppers, salad and rice. At the end of the meal they brought out somr Turkish tea ans Baklava. Obviously we has some wine  which was....  yes you've guessed it Turkish. Vila Doluca  and it was very good, very like a shiraz. I remember having it in Turkey and it is a very popular one. They make a surprising amount of wine in Turkey so if you get a chance definitely try some

Friday night takeaway

St Johns Curry Club

I hadn't had a takeout curry for quite a few months as I have been experimenting with my own. I decided to spend my hard earned cash in my favourite Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. St Johns road Corstorphine to be precise. I get enough for 2 meals usually as there is often a minimum charge for delivery. St Johns is actually lower than many others. Anyhow I ordered  a mixed kebab and vegetable pakora to start and a spicy green herb chicken to follow.  All were excellent and definitely enough for 2 meals. They always pop in a few poppadoms as well  with all the fixings.  I never buy rice as its very expensive and I'd rather spend the money on a side dish or starter. Morrisons also do a fantastic authentic naan bread. Obviously I had a selection of wines to accompany the feast.

Piggy Crabs

After doing some research our hosts took us to this gem which is a definite must do if you like meat and seafood. Just south of Torrevieja it's on a short and bustling strip in Cabio Roig.  Recently opened it already has rave reviews. Our visit certainly didn't disappoint.  Quite unassuming from the outside but stunning and modern inside. The menu is based on combos with extras and sides. Heavy on the bbq meat grills and seafood it is fabulous, and a true feast. The owner and host helped prepare our crab and lobster at the table, and there was suitable equipment provided for us to manage it ourselves, gloves, picks, axes etc. The mixed grill was more manageable. The owner did agree that they should maybe prepare the seafood back of house after the initial presentation.  The sides were all very tasty, patatas bravas and cheese and truffle topped fries were amazing

Pasteria SLZ

SLZ is a modern and vibrant café and pastry shop in La Murada. There's an amazing selection of cakes and pastries to choose from as well as savoury snacks. All available to sit in or take away. Judging by how many people came and went when we were there it's definitely worth a trip or two if you are in the area. Over the course of 2 visits we had a wide variety of pastries washed down with several café con leche. The cinnamon buns and carrot cake are to die for. I opted for a pistachio croissant which was very decadent. On a previous visit we had strawberry and mixed fruit tarts. Compared to UK the prices are extremely reasonable so 2nd and 3rd coffees were required.

Family Time Out

Fitba then Cafe Andaluz

So we had a trip to the big game. The mighty Man Utd taking on the blue half of Glasgow. Following a rain soaked walk back into town from Murrayfield, there seemed to be about 10000 people all waiting for a tram!, we headed for Cafe Andaluz which was very tasty as normal, we had a variety of tapas to share with a selection of wine. The usual suspects of Abodingas. Patatas bravas, Prawns Pil Pil, Calamare all featured. My personal favourirte was the chicken thighs with fresh rosemary, garlic and white wine.. The chorizo red wine was also extremely good. I would definitely recommend Cafe Andaluz if you are a tapas novice.

Curry Night

Friday night fakeaway and others

Making use of some randoms in the freezer I made my favourite chicken curry, or a variation of it seeing as I play about with the ingredients a bit. I made a base curry sauce again so there's now some in the freezer, I fried off the onions till they were very soft before adding the peppers ,chicken, garlic, fresh chilli  and remaining spices I had some left over red wine! Yes it really does exist. This deglazed the pan a bit and gave the sauce a darker tastier finish. All served with basmati rice and my favourite shop bought nan bread. I had a very nice chardonnay from Aldi and a can of Innis and Gunn seeing as it is the weekend! Also featured are finest Scotch beef rib ryes and some fresh sea bass!

Dining out in Edinburgh

Piggs

Lovely tapas place in Edinburgh. Family owned and very popular. Theres one in the Canongate and one in Bruntsfield .  It's ownd by Iggy who owned the first Spanish restaurant in Edinburgh and his son. The one we were in in the Canongate has to be booked a few weeks in advance its tiny and cramped. You may get a table with high stools so not overly comfortable for food.  Our choice of food was very tasty. It’s a limited menu and we opted for the old favourites, chorizo and sweet peppers cooked in cider,  abondigas traditionally made with pork and beef mince in a sherry and tomato sauce. Chicken thighs in garlic and white wine served with toasted sour dough. and patatas bravas. Everything was very tasty. To follow my regular food and travel friend had pudding, she a slice of Basque cheesecake and my favourite of Churros and chocolate. Obviously we had to partake in some white Sangria which was fabulous and red wine for me and white for she. Then it was off to the theatre for Shirley Valentine.!

 Dining in

Some Experimenting

Just a random selection of some of my latest creations I feel like I should make the effort when I am not working in the evenings. Chicken kebab all homemade!  Lamb Kofte, Ok I cheated a bit with a well known retailers BBQ offer. If anyone knows where to get good quality lamb mince let me know. Kimchi is something I had actually not come across before but I see it everywhere now. I saw it at work and everywhere since. So I created a stir fry of vegetable noodles with soy and hoisin sauce topped with breaded chicken and kimchi. All extremely tasty There was also a chicken and roast cherry tomato in there somewhere . Not a lot else as I have been working evenings! But I do get ideas from there as I get fed!

Old Haunts

Edinburgh. Harrods and Cafe Royal

So my regular travel and refreshment partner had a wee return visit to a couple of old watering holes. We added some snacks to the drinks in Harrods champagne bar. The cheese twists were absolutely amazing. Freshly baked fingers of pastry smothered in fresh Parmesan along with some olives. We had the obligatory Prosecco and cocktail!. Onward to the Cafe Royal to have some of the seafood and fish we missed out on last time due to the early January lack of it after the winter break. Thickly sliced lightly smoked salmon with horseradish cream, pickles and soda bread. I went with the moules frite and my friend the fish pie as it was so good the last time. Both places well worth a visit if in Edinburgh.

Weekend Fakeaways

Homemade Indian and Chinese

Chilli and Garlic chicken with pilau rice and nan bread on Saturday.

Five spiced honey and sesame chicken wings followed by Asian beef with Singapore noodles on Sunday

The nan bread with Satudays curry came from Morrisons and is the best one from a supermarket I have had. I use a pre mix of spices from an Asian store and add to my basic curry sauce, Added extra chilli and garlic to the oven cooked spiced chicken. I added a pile of fresh coriander as, in my opinion a curry has to have it 100%.

I should probably have used more marinade and honey to make it a bit more sticky, but I will definitely make again. I popped in a few spring rolls for a wee extra. The beef was from Morrisons butcher counter, thinly sliced top side, Scotch beef  obviously. After that just added a selection of spices, chilli, garlic, ginger and whatever else I could find in the fridge.

All very tasty and not a bad effort on my part. Anyone who knows me will know that I nearly always cook from scratch. I make more effort now that I am not cooking for a living.

Had a couple of glasses of wine as it was the weekend just because I could. The weekends choices hailed from Morrisons as I was there anyway, normally I use Lidl as I feel I get better value there.

Athens

Scholario

This is a bustling restaurant serving authentic and traditional Greek food. I saw it highly recommended on various websites and social media by locals, so I thought we should find out for ourselves. We opted for the sharing meal which was fabulous value at 20 euros each for 5 different meze dishes, bread, water, wine and care to follow.  It’s a very busy restaurant and doesn’t take bookings so prepare for a queue. Luckily in April it wasn't too long to wait. We chose pork sausage, fried cod with garlic, Dokos ( Similar to bruschetta. But much bigger, toasted bread piled high with chopped tomato , white cheese olives and capers. A massive portion but we managed eventually) .Tzatziki and grilled courgette balls with garlic sauce.

The restaurant is clearly a favourite with locals and students. Refreshing to see and be part of the local community though I imagine in the height of summer there will be many more tourists descending on the city.

Athens

Fresh

A cute little café near the parliament building near Sygtama square where we had just witnessed the changing of the guard. There was also a protest of some sort going on and riot police in attendance! We passed it by chance and it looked very colourful and full of lovely products. It was Greek Orthadox Easter weekend so this is why the shops were full of Easter eggs. We only had coffee and some free cake!. Every coffee you buy comes with water as they do in other countries as standard, but the place looked lovely so I had to take some photos.

Athens

Maria Callas Bistro

We stumbled on this by chance after visiting the fabulous Maria Callas museum in the main shopping district. Situated in the Monastriki area near the Acropolis this was a lovely place with lovely and attentive staff maybe more so as we were buying lots of wine! The food was very good, we had a Lamb Sofrito and Beef Carpaccio. As usual in Athens the drinks come with some sort of crisps, nuts and olives. The décor inside was a tribute to Maria Callas and much of it authentic. The rest rooms even had her singing playing in them.

Athens

Have no idea what this place was actually called, It was all Greek to me. I have included a picture of the menu obviously for the name. This was just along from the Maria Callas bistro. It was another traditional Greek restaurant. Everywhere  seems to have pretty much the same menu items and generally speaking the same prices, It's just a question of finding the right one for you. Our waiter here was lovely and after a communication hiccup we shared a starter and then I had a Pork kebab and my friend had lamb shoulder cooked in lemon and oregano. They had a small shop which we had a look around, unfortunately we were already packed to leave and with that and the restrictions on liquids we could only look.

Athens

TIKI BAR

What a fun bar this was. One of the best cock tail bars in Athens by all accounts and just a few minutes from our hotel. We went on our way out for the evening as it was quieter. Great cocktails, ice wine and an obliging DJ! Perfect.

Athens

Mapiaaki

We were on a day trip to Aegena, a lively island only 45 minutes on a high speed ferry away. After a  quick visit to the Temple of Aphaia, recommended to go by taxi, the driver will take you there, wait 30 minutes and bring you back. Worth the money rather than trying to  rely on a sporadic bus service and quicker. Lots of fish restaurants serving fish landed earlier in the day. We had the catch of the day, on this occasion this was grouper served with roasted vegetables and some French fries as an extra. This was followed by a lemon and lime sorbet. The restaurant  was perfectly located by the side of the road overlooking the boats moored in the water. The Grouper was very reasonably priced at 16 euro, even more so after we realised it fed both of us.

Athens

BRETTOS

A traditional Ouzo and Brandy  bar situated behind the Acropolis in a bustling street full of touristy shops and restaurants.  It has all the old fashioned feel about it but is bustling with tourists  It is in fact the oldest distillery in Athens dating back to 1909. The owner has maintained the authenticity of the original bar with some of the traditional décor and barrels are still on show. They serve a wide range of Ouzo, brandy liqueurs, wines and cocktails. They also have a selection of sharing plates of meats and cheese. They have a shop below where you can organise tastings and talks for extra information

60th Birthday Meal

Cafe St Honore

This was only my 2nd visit to the Edinburgh institution, my first having been for my late mothers birthday over 20 years ago and now for another birthday. It's a Parisienne style bistro situated behind the cobbled Thistle st lane. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal and the food classic French bistro with a Scottish twist. The owner/chef is the renowned Neil Forbes  he likes  to source locally as much as possible and is part of the slow food organisation which seeks to promote local foods and a commitment to the local community and the environment. We went with some Shetland oysters, simply served with lemon and the Belhaven cold smoked trout with horseradish cream to start. For mains the choice was difficult to make from the tempting choices but as soon as our server mentioned the word "steak" as she told us the specials there was no other need to look further. It was steak Saturday after all. The other guests in our group had the lamb shoulder and Balmoral chicken. To finish we had a selection of Scottish cheese with homemade oatcakes,  and someone had a classic French crème brulee with homemade shortbread. All this was served with a fine selection of wines from their extensive list. Our choice of wines were  the Fleur de Charlotte  Chardonnay, the Picpoul de Pinet and a  online de Gassac  classic red.

The staff are all attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and on hand to recommend the most expensive wines on the list. I'm sure they would have paired very well with our food but we were very happy with our choices.

Evening out in Edinburgh

Harrods and Amarone

Had my BFF in down on the pretext of discussing our upcoming mini break to Athens. So obviously after I managed to finish work early I hotfooted it into town. After our previous visit to the Harrods bar was so successful we went for a return visit. Once again we went for our default choice of a glass of Prosecco and a Porn Star Martini. Definitely in my top five cock tail bars. Our intention was to got to Pigg in the old town but the best laid plans and all that! We ended up going into Amarone, as it was only 6pm we managed to secure a table. As before it was a really lovely meal. The food is excellent value for money and very tasty. The service is also top notch, We shared some olives and focaccia followed by the Spaghetti Vongole which extremeley good. Wine and a cheeky wee espresso Martini was a must.

Bergamo

La Pasticceria Donitezzi

I stopped in here as there was a conveniently place table and chair with my name on it by the winding shopping street.  Its named after the composer Donizzeti born locally. Coincidently I saw one of his operas some years back in Vienna!. I opted for the Aperol Spritz obviously but other Spritz are available, Campari, Hugo and Lemoncello. It also came with snacks !!! Almonds and olives on this occasion.

Bergamo

Lalimentari

This bustling café bar and restaurant is in the Piazza Vecchio in the Citta Alta. I was there a couple of times and sat  outside which was very pleasant and watched the world go by. Like other parts of Italy when you order a drink they bring snacks as well. The idea being that you buy more drink. What was I supposed to do. Aperol Spritz is my default long cocktail and it's Italian so I just had to try one.  I think my previous survey may need up dated. I did order some food on each occasion.

I had local salami which was amazingly soft an melt in the mouth. The following day on my return visit I opted for the Bresola with cheese. It was a goats cheese which was very soft and very fresh..

Bergamo

I chose not to eat breakfast at the hotel as I was keen to get out and about an mingle. Being offseason it was lovely just to blend in with the locals. Obviously mt Italian is extremely limited so that wasn't 100%. I did have a few excellent pastries, coffees and the local legend of Stracciatella ice cream.  The pistachio croissant was outstanding. The pistachio cream filling  was  very sweet and moreish. A very Italian sweet treat, not just for breakfast!

Bergamo

La Scagna Cucina Tipica

I discovered this excellent local restaurant quite by accident on Twitter ( X )

It came highly recommended and on further research it was indeed one of the top eateries in Bergamo but just off the main thoroughfare connecting the Citta Bassa ( new town) and the Citta Alta. (old town)

I opted for the lunch set price menu.

The local area of Piedmont is known for it's cheese. Gnocchi and polenta. The gnocchi came with a creamy salmon and taleggio sauce and they were amazingly light and fluffy and I had no problem in polishing them off.  Then followed a delicious dish of soft polenta with chicken in a white wine sauce. I made every effort but the mountain of polenta was just too much. All this was accompanied with white wine, water a basket of fresh baked bread and a coffee to follow. Excellent value at 13 euros

Sunday but not a roast

 Beef Tagine

I took inspiration from work where they made a fabulous Beef Tagine.

Having not made one for a while I was pretty impressed with the result. I opted for a pre mix of Ras El Hanout. Which is a blend of coriander. Ginger, smoked paprika, all spice, cardamon, cumin, mace, fennel……any way suffice to say the list is almost endless. Sold at popular retailers. A rich sweet and spiced stew topped with pistachios. ( instead of flaked almonds as I already had them ) and chopped fresh coriander. Served on a bed of couscous couscous, the fine variety but the larger is equally as good. Definitely one to do again. Recipe courtesy of #Rick Stein

Some new experiments

It's all a bit random after working evenings but i mad an effort on the weekends

Salt and Pepper chicken wings

I cheated one night and ordered take out. But I did make my own wings. Lots of salt and pepper, Aleppo chilli flakes and crushed garlic. Roast in oven for 20 minutes then throw some panko bread crumbs on liberally and roast for another 20 minutes for a bit of crunch. Top Tip, huge bags of Panko crumbs can be found very reasonably on a well known on line market place.

Smoked Basa risotto.

So I was feeling decidedly healthy. Having not had smoked fish for some time I made it my favourite way, well one of them. The other being fish cakes. ( watch this space on that one). I got the basa from a well known retailer as it was much cheaper then other varieties. Basa is super healthy, high in protein and omega 3. It's also firm in texture so very versatile. I think it's good to have a variety of types of rice in the larder as it gives me so many options.

Jambalaya

Had a notion to have this after I realised I had some prawns and chorizo in the freezer. Jambalaya can be made with a variety of sausages and depending where your recipe is sourced from. It hails from Louisiana in USA and Cajun or Creole in style.  It can have chicken, rabbit, goat, prawns and sausage of some variety in it along with a selection of vegetables. A real use up dish.  Another rice dish. I used basmati rather than the favoured long grain. It turned out pretty we

Dining in

Day shifts this week so I decided to make an effort in the kitchen. Inspired by the offerings at work last week I went for some Thai flavours, grilled sea bass topped with prawns in a Thai sauce of garlic, chilli, garlic and lime. Flavoured with tamarind and coriander served on a bed of stir fried noodles and vegetables.

Other highlights were a proper Sunday roast chicken and a Chorizo stew!! Perfect for a wet and windy evening.

Dining In

As I have been working quite a few evening shifts, there's been a lack of activity in the kitchen. Fortunately we are very well looked after at work with staff meals. Highlights on the home front have been . Chilli con carne.made with chipotle spices and cannellini beans. Lamb Karahi  curry, inspired by the recent jaunt to Glasgow. I didn’t quite get the colour I wanted but will definitely try again. Yellow lentil dahl which I have never made before so it was an experiment! More recently a chicken kebab easy peasy, just as good as the local take away. Lots of spice involved. I will try for something plainer this week ! All served with a varied choice of wines from my favourite suppliers

Lunch with friends in Glasgow

#Green Gate Cafe

So we had a meet up. Childhood friends coming together for an afternoon of food and drink out. Coming from various parts of Scotland and Boston MA. Our choice of venue was  Green Gate for a late lunch, very busy place with a great atmosphere and attentive staff.  Would recommend booking  even for mid afternoon. Just 5 minutes from previous venue near the merchant city. Fabulous Indian tapas and grill. Check out for promotions across all the usual sites, Easily one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to. We had a wide and varied selection between us all. Highlights Lamb Kadhai, Goan Prawns, and Chilli Garlic Chicken. I've left the menu here to look at.  Will definitely return.

We wedged the lunch in between the bars! . It had to be done.

Drinks with friends in Glasgow

#The Metropolitan and #The Horseshoe Bar

The Metropolitan

Had a lovely day out catching up with school friends. We all swept in with the wind from all over Scotland and as far away as Boston ( the Massachusetts one)

Having had a slight delay in finding each other there was nothing else to do apart from head to the #Metropolitan for cocktails. It's in the Merchant City. Very busy but pretty up market as are most of the bars around there. We went back later in the day as they were so good. My default cocktails had to be ordered as I had never been before/ Old favourites. Porn Star Martini 4/5 and Classic Mojito 4.5/5 My partners in Crime had a Bramble, Summer Spritz ( in Winter ) and a Hugo Spritz. All excellent and a really nice place.

The Horseshoe Bar

We also had a quick visit to this Glasgow institution. A quick glass of house white and a Lagavulin to finish the evening off before going our separate ways on a stormy night.

Cocktails

Simply has to be done

We stumbled on the Harrods beauty and make up shop by accident in the St James Quarter in Edinburgh. Then we realised they have a Champagne and cocktail bar. So what's a girl to do. Classic Mojito for me and  Passionfruit Martini, otherwise known as Porn Star Martini. for my BFF Jane. Both up there with the best I have had. Following on from that and our dinner we hotfooted it along George st and went to the Alchemist, another new one for me. It was bouncing for a Tuesday, but being Scotland it's still an official holiday.  It has a wide, unusual and varied cocktail list. Jane had a Lava lamp and a French Kiss. I had a Mojito and a French Kiss. Then it was onto an old favourite Tiger Lily for another Porn Star martini. By that time we decided enough was enough and we headed home!

A wee evening out in Edinburgh

Somewhere I haven't been to for a long time. Café Royal is a long established traditional bar and restaurant just behind the east end of Princes St in Edinburgh. It's also Scotland's  oldest oyster bar. Being the 2nd of January the menu had a few items missing which was understandable as it is known for its seafood platters and oysters.

We both had the smoked haddock Scotch eggs which were amazing. Jane had the fish pie which is her favourite. Packed full of fish, a mashed potato topping and buttered broccoli spears. I had the pork chop with picked vegetables and Asian sauce it was extremely good but maybe a wee bit too much of the sauce. Rosemary fries on the side. I usually don’t like paying extra for a side order but I was hungry. All this accompanied by a glass of Prosecco and a glass or two of wine.  I had a red Pinot Noir and Jane a Provencal Rose.

No time for a desert and we had to follow up our visit to the Harrods champagne bar with a few more cocktails.

Festive Goodies

Easy home made treats, perfect for gifts

I have had a hectic time with a few festive treats that I haven't tried before. All amazingly easy and hassle free to make! Leaving plenty of time for other more social activities.

Lemoncello

I have had this a few times in Italy, being in Palermo earlier on this year reignited my love for it. Lemons are plentiful and very cheap. Just add pure alcohol to the lemon zest, wait a while, add sugar and water, wait some more. Strain into bottles after tasting. Serve! X

Chocolate Bark

Another first and another easy one.

Spread some good quality melted chocolate thinly on greaseproof paper, sprinkle lots of other goodies liberally over it, leave to cool and refrigerate.

Chocolate Tiffin

Traditional Scottish no cook tray bake. Literally an all in one recipe. Numerous recipes are out there. The quality and taste will vary depending on your chocolate. I used a lovely Belgian one that I had previously used at  work. Purchased from a well known on line site. Chocolate, raisins, syrup! and digestives

Spiced Nectarine Chutney

Ideal way to use up some bits and bobs picked up in the mark downs at the shops. Definitely for a bit of a kick to it. Probably could have used a bit less chilli.

Shortbread.

My mums recipe, rich, crumbly and very tasty.

Christmas Catch Up

Night out in the Ferry

A pre Christmas night out with my BFF was required, so after my final shift before the Christmas break I hot footed it up to Broughty Ferry and the fun commenced. Cocktails at #Bruach, dinner at #The Ship and drinks at #Doc Ferries. Home by 10ish as I was knackered, a total light weight.

Lovely cocktails as always. The usual suspects, Mojito, had to have one as in the midst of a survey to find my favourite. Porn Star Martin, my default choice, survey completed on this one, scroll through website for details. Jane then had a raspberry Mojito while I had a Spritz made with Hendricks Gin and elderflower rather than the classic Aperol. I will definitely return for one of them.

Moving on to The Ship, we had a lovely dinner. I had sea bass tempura with Bombay Aloo and Onion Bhaji while Jane had the freshly battered haddock. One of many excellent eateries in the town.

Finally moved on to our favourite local pub. Doc Ferrys for a couple of drinks before heading home.

Dinner in the hoose

Saturday steak night on a Sunday and Monday night fakeaway. Scotch beef from #Morrisons as usual. Always very tasty and straight from the butcher counter. Medium rare and served with chunky chips, green beans and red wine sauce. I had some left over wine! !!

Monday night fakeaway. Chicken with ginger and spring onion with fried rice and a duck spring roll which I found lurking in the freezer

Di Maggios

Friday night in Glasgow to see Madness and the Lightening Seeds. In hindsight we should have pre booked but we decided to wing it. Places were busy and it was cold so we ended up in Di Maggios which has always been good in the past. It was mainly very tasty, great selection and service. My pasta was disappointing but as normal most restaurant pasta is easily replicated at home. We also had the house burger, turkey Christmas dinner, stuffed mushrooms, king prawns and my default starter of calamari ❤️ All very tasty. Lovely Mochito, but more of that to come after I have consumed a few elsewhere.!

Dining Chez Moi

Back to reality

Back to reality and the daily grind after a hectic November. Roll on December and the festivities.

Just made a couple of exciting homemade meals. A splendiferous ( that is actually a real word!) chilli con carne with s few fixings. Followed by a traditional Sunday roast chicken with all the fixings; Both extremely tasty. Obviously some wine was quaffed!

Stock made and in the freezer.

And a quick batch of short bread for munching on. Made while counting down to another evening at work.

Scroll back for all the exciting stuff, holiday food and such like 😂❤️.

The mystery outlet is some homemade Lemoncello I am making.  I had some fabulous stuff in Palermo earlier on this year. Scroll on back for full details 🍋

Osteria

Family birthday meal

The final night out of my birthday week.  Osteria is a fabulous  Italian restaurant in Colinton village in Edinburgh. It is fairly new and is in the same premises as a few other establishments.

We had olives, bruschetta and bread accompanied by olive oil and a balsamic reduction.

We had pastas which were Spaghettoni con Guanciale and Carciofi, Paccheri con Salsiccia and Porcini , Frito Misto Paccheri al Ragu di Agnello. All expertly prepared by the team. We then shared some cheese to accompany some more wine!

Shopping and Football

La Tagliatella

After another trip to a shopping mall  ( Zara) prior to going to the football we went to the very busy restaurant in the food court.  La Tagliatella, there's one at Alicante airport as well  which looks like a great alternative to Subway.

Pizza was the order of the day for my companions while I opted for my default beef carpaccio. I always have it. It was fabulous with plenty of fresh parmesan shavings. My friends all agreed that it was definitely the best pizza they had ever had.

Following that we headed to support the local football team Elche who play in the 2nd tier of Spanish football. They won 2-0.

Altea

A lovely day out

We also took a trip to Altea a beautiful town north of Benidorm where we had cocktails followed by  some Chinese.  It has an old town a short walk up the hill full of winding streets with white washed houses, shops and buildings, There's also a stunning cathedral. Back down the hill we enjoyed a waterside cocktail and some Chinese food.

Days Out

Birthday Bash at Bombay Catral

As usual had a fabulous time visiting our friends. It wouldn’t be complete without a visit to their favourite Indian restaurant. Bombay Cataral. This time was for my birthday so I was made to feel extra special. They do a fantastic 3 courses for 14 euros. As always Dilbar makes us feel very welcome.

Salzillo

At the start of another fantastic day we headed out for a heaithy dose of morning coffees and cake.

Local favourite of carrot cake, cheese cake with rasberry compot. Hazelnut choux bun and a cinnamon choux bun. All accompanied with copious amounts of café con leche.

Weeknight Dinners

Had a bit of a culinary frenzy this week. Some Spanish tapas one night and fishcakes another.

Tapas were Chorizo, garlic  and onion in red wine. Unusually in this house it was left over wine. Patatas bravas with some spicy sauce, roast pepper and garlic and some prawns and garlic butter.

The fish cakes were, smoked basa, chorizo and coriander served with a tomato salad. It's amazing  what can be found in the depths of the fridge.

Wine was optional. as per normal.

Week Night Dinners

After postponing the finest Scotch sirloins from steak Saturday, we finally had them on Monday night. Served with a simple tomato and red onion salad. One medium and one medium rare. Served with a side of red wine sauce.  How do you like yours cooked.

After the red meat and other rich foods I have decided yo try and eat vegetarian a couple of times a week. Tuesdays result was a Moroccan sweet potato and vegetable tagine served with bulgar wheat and pitta bread. The bulgar wheat really benefits from a touch of my previously mentioned homemade preserved lemons.

Wine was served on both evenings. A splendid Portuguese red from the Lisbon area and a French chardonnay

Porn Star Martinis

So I have been around a fair bit in the past year. I like to try the same cocktail in different cocktail bars.

Porn Star Martini is the current default. How do you drink the Prosecco shot. On its own or in the mix?

1 Sugarboat in Helensburgh. So good I had 3!! 4.5/5.

2 Tiger Lily  in Edinburgh. Very tasty. A bit too sweet for me though 4/5

3 My personal favourite at #la Finca, Elche, Spain. Well worth the money. Quality ingredients, packed a punch and presented very well. 5*/5

4 Sabana in Barcelona. Lovely again nice thick passion fruit and vanilla. 4*/5

5 Bruach. Broughty Ferry. Very tasty but not wow! 4/5

6 JNcQUOI in Lisbon. Top notch cocktail in a high class bar. Definitely worth a visit.  Nice dry prosecco to balance the sweetness of the passion fruit and vanilla

Old Haunts

Wildish Night in Helensburgh

So Jane and I headed to our home town for a visit. My family home is no more so I cadged a bed for the night at hers. Started off with a wee glass of Provencal Rose at the local wine bar La Jupe which is pleasantly situated on the seafront. Had we been in town for more than one night we would have stayed for longer and possible had some food.

But moving on swiftly we headed for River Hill Courtyard. Busy and bustling bar diner. Rarely fails to please. Beef Taco. Butter Chicken Curry and the House Burger  were our chosen dishes. Definitely worth a visit. Cocktails and St Mungos fab as always.

Moving on again we headed for the Sugar Boat another gem in town. Porn Star Martinis order of the day. It's probably equal 3 in my list of favourite PSM in my own survey It's another busy bar and restaurant. The food in here is also fab by the way. The Turkish Eggs are the best, if they still do them

Sunday Lunch/Monday Dinner

Chicken and some of the fixings.

After the night out we decided to keep it simple with roast chicken for a traditional Sunday lunch.Experimented with some roast garlic in a fancy wee dish I bought. All very tasty.

The healthy option for Monday

I need to try and eat  a bit more healthy. Apparently not eating  processed food, biscuits, crisps or too much sugar is enough anymore. So I opted for a veggie pasta. A fancy multicoloured twisty variety with aubergine, cherry tomato, roast pepper and mozzarella. Was very tasty.

Saturday Night Oot

#Karens Unicorn

So we had to go to plan B for the birthday boys meal out. Plan A was Italian and postponed due to a gas supply issue. I think they either didn’t feed the meter or fancied a night off from the bad weather! Karens is in Abercromby Place in Edinburgh's New Town. We had a fantastic meal. My highlight being the Soft Shell crab in a light batter. Sweet  chilli sauce was definitely more heat than sweet. The duck dish was fantastic so I am told. I opted for my usual Kung Po chicken which had just the right amount of spice for me. The restaurant is very welcoming and staff all lovely and very efficient.

Friday Night Fakeaway

Chicken Biryani

Getting to be a dab hand at these. Basmati rice cooked with rose petals, cardamon and cloves with a touch of turmeric. Chicken marinated in spices, yoghurt, garlic and ginger. Vegetable curry sauce flavoured with a special Biryani blend, ok I cheated on that bit and bought that one, with extra garlic and fennel seeds. Layered up and topped with fried onions for sweetness and fresh coriander. Extremely tasty indeed. Obviously a wee glass of wine was involved.

Saturday Steak Night

That time of the week again. Family dinner chez moi. Fabulous Scotch Beef steaks from #Morrisons' Sirloin was the choice, served with, Dauphinoise potatoes, green beans, asparagus and a red wine sauce. Followed by a raspberry and nectarine Eton Mess. I had to warm the nectarine in a little booze to soften up. All followed up with some cheese from France and Spain. Lashings of wine obligatory.

Midweek Meals

Pork and Duck

So I decided to make something with a little less spice to it and try something a bit different. Armed with a massive bag of spinach which actually reduces into a fraction of what it looks like, pork fillet from the freezer and some yellow label duck breasts.  These are the results. Pork fillet with lardons and apple in a cider sauce served on a bed of spinach. Duck breast on a bed of spinach with a red wine sauce. I had to open the wine for the sauce ! Honestly. # Naked Wines.

Friday Night Fakeaway

As a novice of homemade Chinese food I was pretty impressed with my latest effort. BBQ and chilli pork ribs followed by Kun Po ish prawns and cashew nuts. I have built up a stash of various bottles of oriental looking bottles from the world food aisle at a well-known retailer. It was very tasty, just as good as some actual take aways. Obviously I had to have a wee glass of vino.

Harvey Nicks

HN do a fabulous set menu for £30. three courses and a glass of fizz. Top Notch food and service. The pudding was to die for and I rarely have a pudding. My main bug bear about restaurants is where they charge a supplement for cheese rather than offering a smaller portion or just one type. ( see example from my trip to Belfast) Frequently there's far too much for one person anyway.

Tiger Lily
Tiger Lily

Jane and I headed out to a fashion event at Tiger Lily in Edinburgh. The Event was being held by the Tiger Lily Boutique in Broughty Ferry and Aberdeen. Prosecco, brunch, cocktails followed by a fashion show and the chance to buy some of their fabulous fashions. Our eggs benedict went down a treat. Obviously the cocktails did. Summer berry Margarita, Classic Mojito and Porn Star Martini!

Pasta Night

Purchased some delicious Italian sausage from the excellent #Valvona Crolla and opted to make a ragu with plenty of tomato, onion , garlic and fresh basil. A wee touch of chilli for some heat. with it. The pasta came from a farm shop  in East Lothian. Served with a splash or two of lovely red wine. I went down very well. # Naked Wines for the magnificent red

Dinner for 1

Saturday Night Fake Away

Homemade curry for me. seeing as I had a few things to use up lurking in the fridge. Chicken marinaded in finely diced onion, garlic, ginger and some tandoori spice. Pan fried the chicken with some fried onions and more green chillies, tomato and garlic Served with some basmati rice and nan bread! Yummo. Accompanied by a chilled glass of white wine! It has to be done.

Deanes

Love Fish

As we are both lovers of fish I did a bit of research to find the perfect one for a final night meal.A gem of a find and Michelin starred. One of several Michael Deane restaurants. It was very busy and rightly so. It has an extensive and varied menu. I had the crispy squid with Asian salad, basil emulsion and chilli oil. My friend had  a Crab Welsh rarebit. Both were delicious. We both opted for the Bouillabaisse  which was top notch and very tasty. For pudding my friend had a chocolate pot topped with raspberry sorbet while I opted for an Irish blue cheese with a fig jam with walnuts. All washed down with a fine glass of prosecco , Rose, obviously,  for the Bouillabaisse and red for my cheese. Fabulous attentive but not intrusive service

#DeanesLoveFish

Archana

We both had a notion for a curry and combined with some research and advice from the hotel we plumped for this popular restaurant that has been around for nearly forty years.

#archana

The Chubby Cherub

Popular Italian Eaterie

Trying to get our bearings we had a wee traipse around looking for somewhere for dinner. We must have looked lost as a friendly local recommended a nearby restaurant and told us to tell them he had recommended it We had cocktails, followed by minestrone , caprese and a lovely pizza

#TheChubbyCherub

Belfast

Pubs and Guinness

One of the most famous bars in Belfast. It dates back to the 1880s and is located in a magnificent Victorian building. Worht visiting for a taste of fine Irish Guinness Luckily it was very close to our hotel.

The Morning Star is a traditional family owned bar and restaurant which gets  very busy for food and drink. We opted to sit outside

Fibber Magees is a well known and bustling pub with live music. It was very busy  and we met a few locals and managed a jig or two .

Sunday Dinner

Something Mediterranean

Purchased some lovely Scotch leg of lamb at the supermarket and decided to cook a reminder of the holidays.

I already had the caponata which I made from the leftovers from earlier in the week. Celery, aubergine , onion, red pepper, garlic and capers. I still have celery so will need to freeze it. Note to every supermarket in the world to start selling  celery by the stick.

Lamb seasoned and tossed in oregano and a wee drop smoked paprika and cooked with onions and my previously preserved lemons. Scrumptious ! Especially with a wee glass of Portuguese red wine.

Sunday Night Cinema

The Greatest Showman

A wee trip up to Broughty Ferry to see my BFF and some of her former work colleagues. Made our posh picnic of Nicoise salad and a few other bits and bobs. Popcorn and wine mandatory !  We then  set off for an out outdoor screening of the Greatest Showman at Scone Palace.  There was a few interruptions with peacocks screeching nearby.   A good night was had by all.

Saturday Steak Night

Steak night once again. Medium rare with Dauphinoise potatoes and green beans. Served with a glass of red. I ambitiously threw together a tray of shortbread  at the same time! It has to be done.

Tapas Night

Cafe Andaluz

After the distillery tour we headed to #Café Andaluz. My first visit surprisingly and I will definitely return. Bustling and noisy but a great atmosphere.  We had a wide range of tapas between us . The usual suspects, chorizo, tortilla, calamari paella and  prawns Pil Pil which had a less alarming effect on me than the ones I had in Barcelona where I managed to eat a very fiery chilli and had to be fed a few glasses of water by the staff to recover! We also had the Padrone peppers and fresh anchovies which are family favourites. Lots of other goodies consumed accompanied by some Sagres Rioja and Chardonnay!.  Highly recommended.

Pickerings Gin

The Tour

#Pickerings Gin is the first Gin Distillery in 150 years. The brainchild of Matt and Marcus.Situated in Summerhall in Edinburgh after a gin and tonic in the adjoining Dick Vet bar our guide Jamie took us on a tour round the distillery. It's surprisingly small considering the amount of gin it produces. The tour takes about 2 hours and includes tastings and a sample to take home. Would thoroughly recommend even if you are not a huge gin fan.

Night out in Edinburgh

Cocktails and Mowgli

After our favourite Porn Star Martini in All Bar One we went to our chosen  restaurant for some food. Early dinner/ late lunch. We had decided to try out a new place called Mowgli as it had been recommended. Set in stunning surroundings in the old Clydesdale Bank . The service was fantastic and  very enthusiastic.  #Mowgli is the brainchild of Nisha who has very impressive credentials. Unfortunately the actual food on our visit was very underwhelming. Everything about the place should be delivering so much more. Hopefully other people will have a better experience.

Week night dinners

Keeping up with the healthy and homemade goodies for dinner. Salads required as the weather is still reasonable. Even made time to make some preserved lemons and pickled garlic for the future . Nuts for the winter and all that. Breaded chicken, Chicken Chilli Masala, spicy potato and onion fritters, creamy chicken and tomato pasta. Fresh herbs and dried chillies which are from Sicily and always  excellent.

Dine in for one

Holiday Mood

I thought I better make an effort this week and .I am trying to eat the healthy stuff and something with the holiday feeling. Chicken Souvlaki and a Chorizo, aubergine and chickpea stew. I also made sides of Hummus. Tzatziki and Baba Ganoush with the leftovers! Very yummy. Had a wee glass of vino to go with it. #Aldi wine

Mexican Night

Pulled Beef Nachos sour cream

So I took a wee notion for some beef. They had a 3 for £10 at the supermarket . It was Denver steaks but I decided that a slow cook was in order. I slow cooked for a couple of hours  with some vegetables and tomatoes and Chipotle spices. Shredded it up and served with some corn chips and sour cream

#JNcQUOI

Smart and friendly bar and diner

Top notch. High end, trendy bar and diner. We went in here as we fancied a cocktail and ended up each night. Very expensive compared to other cocktail places we had been in but you get what you pay for. Slick, well trained  and professional staff. By the 3rd night they welcomed us in like old friends and we had a lovely chat with the hostess about the state of the world as it is today. Cocktails consumed, Porn Star Martinis, Mojitos, Gin Sour and Caprihina

Lisbon

Finally Jane and I went on our postponed mini break to Lisbon. We had to postpone due to Covid . Having left around the crack of dawn we were wandering around the centre of Lisbon around midday. first stop was for coffee of the iced variety in Leonidas ( A Belgian café) with a posh chocolate on the side. In between shopping in Zara and Mango we had another pitstop for a popular Lisbon favourite of Sardines and a wee glass of wine. Later on in preparation for the big hike up the hill to the hotel we stopped for a beer and got a taxi. Taxis in Lisbon are very  cheap. A trip to the Tile museum is well worth it and has a lovely wee garden cafe to have a refreshment from the long walk out from the town! Buses and taxis are also available.

#Cervejaria Ramiro

An institution

This was the one place I was determined to come to after seeing Rick Steins Long Weekend in Lisbon where he came here. One of the oldest restaurants in Lisbon and probably best to book to avoid joining a queue to sit downstairs. The food was lovely, we had a pile of garlic bread, prawns in garlic and chilli, clams in wine and butter and a few oysters. Our neighbours had the spider crabs, had we not had a late lunch earlier we would easily have eaten more. Had a wee throwback to the 70s with a bottle of Mateus Rose.

#Restaurante Bonjarbim

Best Piri Piri in town

This is a Lisbon institution and is well known for its' chicken Piri Piri. Jane had found the place by researching this extensively. Huge portions, lovely staff and wine. There were lots of locals in when we were there which is always a good sign. It was so good we went back 2 nights later. I'm still convinced we were undercharged but in fact it was 16 euros for a whole chicken and not each  of us.

#Time Out Market

Busy Busy Busy

This was recommendation also featured on #Rick Stein but we had previously been to the one in Florence. It's a huge posh food hall in a refurbished ware house, excellent idea and some top chefs have had pop up units in it. Every kind of food is available and you simply order and pay at your choice of restaurant and go back to pick up your food when your alert disc rattles beside you. It was rammed so clearly very popular.

Sunday Lunch

I've been on fire this weekend, busy busy. We had some cod in the house and so I decided to jazz it up a bit and salted it up overnight and made some fish cakes.  I poached the cod in some milk and then boiled some potatoes in the milk after. After chilling down I just crushed it all up and added it some finely chopped red onion, garlic and my remaining coriander from my Mexican extravaganza. Simply pan fried in Panko bread crumbs and served with mixed leaves. Homemade Aioli and some peach for a bit of sweetness. !! Definitely making this again.

Mexican street food at home

I took a notion for some Mexican food but I wanted something a bit different . So based on some research consisting of reading some of #Rick Stein Road to Mexico and a meal I had at the previously mentioned #Riverhill Courtyard in Helensburgh. I came up with this. I also had a trek into town for a couple of supplies #Lupe Pintos. Here we have my take on Pork Birria. Slow cooked pork in a spiced Mexican soup. Soupy Stew!) Lots of onion, garlic and dried chillies blended with chipotle spiced and tomatoes. I added some beef stock as I couldn’t get the bones. I served it with roasted peppers and sweet potato topped with cheese and flour tortillas. I was very impressed personally. There's even enough for another meal if I add in some of my Spanish Chorizo also bought from Lupe's. I enjoyed a wee 0% Corona to wash it down with

Steak Night

Scotch Beef is the best

Amazing Scotch beef from Morrisons.  Pan fried medium rare with a wee drop mustard and red wine sauce. Made with Dijon mustard of course. Served with fries and a side of mixed salad. It's like ronseal, does exactly what it says on the tin.  Dinner made in under 20 minute ! With a wee glass of  Lidls finest and cheap red wine.

A spot of Italian

I made this pasta a few weeks ago and it was so tasty I am making it again. I found some Italian style sausages, aubergine, red pepper lurking in the fridge and freezer. I added in the leftover tomato sauce from the homemade pizza the other day. Threw in some fancy expensive pasta and served. Made. Sometimes the best meals come from left overs and cuts down on waste. Served with optional fresh Parmesan and side salad. The only thing that wasn't was the wine as there's no such thing as left over wine.

I

I

Anyone for wine?

Red, white or Rose

Anyone who knows me can testify that I am partial to a glass or two of wine, with or without a meal.  Here's a selection of some rather tasty ones from fantastic restaurants #Naked Wines,#La Finca, #Ramblero, Lidl, Aldi and other popular retailers.

Coffee Time

I love having a cup of coffee out or after a meal. Flat white or a Café con Leche in Spain, Cappuccino in Italy. Sometimes a slice of cake or croissant at breakfast. Here's a wee selection from #Spinnato in Palermo, Costa Blanca,#K.Serol in Barcelona and back here in Scotland.

Summer  Sun

Definitely feeling summery now. I can't remember the last time it rained. . So I made one of my favourites again. Tomato and mozzarella  with fresh basil and a balsamic, olive oil dressing. Freshly ground black pepper to finish it off.  Followed this with roast chicken thighs and vegetables with a side of mined boiled tatties.

Following night was Fakeaway night of homemade pizza! Magnifico !

Friday Night Fakeaway

Went all out on the curry tonight. Home made bhajis, chapatis and garlic and chilli chicken. Yummo

Italian dinner

My turn again to cook dinner. Saw some lovely Italian style sausages in Marks and Spencer and decided on skinning them and cooking them with tomato, red peppers and garlic. It worked really well especially with the all important splash of red wine. It was very tasty. Nothing else to go with it as I forgot to make garlic bread.

Feeling Summery

The Healthier Option

Tuesday night and my turn to make the dinner. Definitely feeling the summer coming in so went for the healthy salad option. Pan fried breaded pork loin served with a tomato and mozzarella salad and tattie salad. Ignoring the fact that the breadcrumbs are probably not that healthy. It was very tasty anyhow and had a wee drop of wine to wash it down with.

Big Weekend

Had a blast at the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Dundee. Highlights were the company of Jane, Lewis Capaldi and Edinburgh Gin. Had a leisurely lunch on Monday at the Sweetpea Café in Broughty Ferry. Had a very tasty Fish Finger Burger, lovely looking café and lovely staff. We also planned our next mini break and booked a very popular restaurant in Lisbon as recommended. Later on at home enjoyed a fabulous Chicken risotto made by my brother, he makes a great risotto. Any excuse to open a bottle of wine

#sweetpea cafe

Saturday Steak Out/In

Morrisons finest Scotch sirloin steak. Pan fried, served with Dauphinoise tatties and green beans. It wouldn't be complete without a glass or 2 of a cheeky wee red wine.

Friday Night Fake Away

So I discovered a whole bunch of stuff in the freezer and fridge and have once again put them to good use.  I turned a couple of burgers into beef koftes and served Mexican/Indian style with salsa, guacamole and garlic mayo. All topped off with a side of roasted sweet potatoes and nan bread.  I literally just realised I forgot to get the grated cheese out!

Nearly the weekend

Week night use up time

So I discovered a whole bunch of stuff in the freezer and fridge and have put them to good use. Pan fried chicken with basmati rice and a Caponata type dish. I'm calling it that because Jamie Oliver would. It has capers and aubergine so I think its allowed. Next night a cheeky wee paella

The Healthy Choice

Having a meat free day finally

So I felt the need to eat a bit healthier for at least a day. I went all Italian. My ultimate go to vegetarian choice. Caprese salad followed by pasta with aubergine, cherry tomatoes, garlic, chilli and fresh basil. The fresh basil plants have finally started living for more than a few days like they are supposed to. The usual glass or two of wine made it a bit less healthy but I was making an effort.

Fun packed 10 days

A full on time recently. 5 fabulous days in La Murada with the Beatties. Started out with a post Coronation celebration where I got into the swing of things. I even had the best and biggest hat for the occasion. I felt I had to join in the fun. It was a great afternoon and aI met lots of lovely people. A visit from a family friend Shelagh from Perth ( Austrailia) and a visit to Perth ( Scotland) Races for ladies day with Jane  and the crew from Tiger Lily Boutique. Fantastic time had by all and great food as well. Bring on the next one.

Tapas Night

So we had a family tapas night at my place. A wee get together on the first anniversary of our Mums passing. Tried not to get carried away and had to force myself to put the pork into the freezer and abandon the meatballs for the first time ever. Plenty of fish and seafood.  Boquerones, gambas, vegetable paella which my wee brother makes superbly, chorizo which I bought in Barcelona cooked in garlic, onion and red wine. Add into that some spinach with chickpeas and basa and some other splendid tapas. Then I got a bit carried away and made chicken skewers, salad, olives, manchego, Iberico ham……………………Oh and wine of course!

Something new

Prawn Biryiani

Biryani is something I have rarely made but I thought I would experiment as I had all the relevant ingredients and it would save a trip to the shops. I browsed through a few recipes and then made it up as I went along. I happened to have some dried rose petals which I popped in the rice for a bit of extra flavour as suggested by various well known chefs. Cooking the onions vey well is also recommended and I also crisped some up in butter for a bit of extra  flavour for the top. It was very tasty and will definitely make it again.

Cocktails in the Ferry

Cocktails at #Bruach

Bruach is a popular and bustling  destination for the locals of Broughty Ferry serving a wide variety of fabulous cocktails and other assorted refreshments. There's also a restaurant upstairs with a varied menu serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. My partner in crime and I were there for the cocktails. Porn Star Martinis were the order of the day, followed by Mojitos.

Very tasty all round. Lovely comfortable surroundings and excellent service.

#Bombay Joes

Excellent  Indian restaurant in Broughty ferry serving all your favourite curries.  We opted for the evening menu 3 courses for £19.95 is very good value. We had lamb kebabs, chicken Karachi ( bhuna with extra chillies and peppers) followed by some delicious ice cream. The restaurant is stunningly decorated and service excellent as always. They also have a take away service available.

Home alone curry

Fancied a wee curry to myself the other night. Decided to have the full works. well near enough. Chicken chilli masala. I found a really good spice blend in the shop. Byriani Masala; just add garlic, ginger and whatever else takes your fancy. Made a side of aubergine and potato which actually tasted very like the one I get from the takeaway. Rice and nan to top it up. Nan bread shop bought as it is so good.

Dantes

Another day another birthday

Another family birthday meal. #Dantes in Colinton Village is a local institution. Very popular with locals and serves high quality Italian fare. Pizza inferno is a must have.

Mamma Roma

Catch up with good friends

Had a lovely lunch out with good friends Sue and Mary. Obviously we had a few drinks for quality and control purposes. Fabulous restaurant in Edinburgh just over the road from the Playhouse. # MammaRoma. Good time was had by all.  Recommend  the anti pasti and a steak

Sunday Lunch but on a Saturday

Perfect family Sunday lunch. Roast lamb with all the trimmings and wine. Oh and there was a birthday as well. We actually had it on the Saturday but what difference is a day

Pizza Night!

Definitely as good as shop bought

So after my lunch out was unavoidably postponed I hummed and hawed an decided to make pizza. I will be eating it for the next few days judging by the amount of dough there is. Very easy and some random stuff for toppings ! Obviously some wine from my supplier #NakedWines

Bon Appetit

Chinese or Indian?
What to do

             Choices choices

So I went with a Kung Po Chicken and a Chicken and chilli masala .Obviously not both on the same night.  I was quite impressed with myself

Spot of pasta

So back to Edinburgh after the fun of a couple of mini breaks. Had a rake around the freezer and frige and came up with this. Toulouse sausage pasta, cherry tomatoes, chilli and basil. Oregano and chillies straight from the market in Palermo and topped with fresh parmesan.

7 Portes

I was in this very well established traditional restaurant around 20 years ago on a recommendation and was keen to go back as it had been so good. As we had already had the menu del dia at lunch time we just had the sharing tapas  starter. A word of caution though, many places automatically put a bottle of water  and bread on the table, this is often added to the bill but not that expensive The meal itself was very tasty and traditionally served. Our server David was attentive but not intrusive and dressed in traditional black and white attire.  He probably found us a bit noisy  but he was game for a laugh and posed for a picture. A pianist was on hand to keep us entertained, apparently we were using the same table Charlton Heston once sat at.

Ramblero

Found this wonderful seafood and tapas restaurant on the edge of the Mercat De La Boqueria in La Ramblas. So fabulous we went 3 times. Fantastic staff and food. Virtually the first place you come to near the entrance. Attended to by the lovely Christina  and her colleagues.

Barcelona

Mercat de la Boqueria

Another amazing market situated in Les Ramblas. Bustling from early morning till the evening when stall holders, cafes and restaurants gradually close for the evening. Locals and tourists alike hustle and bustle through the stalls of seafood, fish and local delicacies. Tourists jostle for service and offers of mini cones and small plates laden with croqettes, Iberico hams and frito misto.

Barcelona with Jane

Stumbled upon this fabulous but surprisingly quiet little stylish bar near our hotel. Cheeky wee glass of rose followed by a fantastic Porn Star Martini. 2nd top in my list just behind la Finca ( see previous posts) based purely on presentation. The staff were lovely and we were very well looked after. A few glasses of wine and Porn Star Martinis later and we had a good nights sleep.

Barcelona with Jane

A visit to Barcelona would not be complete with out going to El Corte Inglese. After the obligatory  shifty round for some retail therapy we had to visit the very impressive roof top bar and restaurant. We plumped for a large self serve glass of vino and were really impressed when the lady on the till sent us back to top our glasses up!

Barcelona with Jane

After visit to La Sagrada Familla we found this friendly local bar and eaterie  #KSerol near by. We opted for the menu del dia. It seemed very good value at 14.95 euro for 3 tapas style dishes but exceptional value when we realised it included wine and coffee. The owner was lovely and when I asked him how he felt about Scotland beating Spain in the football a few nights previously it turned out he was French and delighted.( red faced or what)

El Cercle

We found this lovely looking place down at the bottom of the main street after we had left our bags at the hotel and were waiting to check in. It looked very nice with it's open air seated ares. First glass of wine is always nice. The food while tasty was disppointng in size. This is how we ended up in El Corte Inglese later on as we were still hungry.

Aperol Spritz

So I felt I should conduct a survey of the best Aperol Spritz Rule of thumb seemed to be you get what you pay for. For those of you who don't know. Aperol Spritz is a long cocktail made from  the Italian aperitif Aperol. Aperol is bitter in taste and made from rhubarb, gentian and cinchona. The Spritz is made by adding ice, prosecco and soda water to the Aperol. The cheaper you pay for it the more soda water you will get.

Palermo

Making the most of my short visit i decided to eat in somewhere different every day. All for research purposes obviously. Plenty on offer and easy to find places not serving pizza or pasta. I found a fabulous fish restaurant  near my hotel.

Palermo - Lemoncello time

A visit to Sicily isn't complete without a taste of this wonderful liqueur. Given the abundance  There's numerous varieties and shops will always provide a wee sample. Working your way through several shops is fun. The shops have a wide variety of local spice mixes, salamis and foodie gifts to take home. A selection of fine wine, olive oils and marsala are worth a look. Unfortunately I had to wait till the airport to make my alcohol purchases.

The Mercado market in Palermo

Walking and street food

Walking tours through the old town are very popular and take in a walk up the main market street of the Mercado market. The market is a wonderful place, a huge array of sights, sounds and sensory delights stall holders blaring loud music and shouting over each other as they compete for business from the constant stream of locals and tourists. This is a proper market with locally sourced food for the local population. There's also a roaring trade in street food, with traders stalls displayed with a constant selection of small dishes to purchase. We had giant arancini, chickpea fritter, pecorino cheese with pistachios, pomegranate juice and lemon granita. I was the only one brave enough to taste the spleen sandwich, definitely not for me and I will try anything once.

Spinnato

Lunch in the sun

I read about this café bar in Rick Steins Long Weekends book. I actually found it by accident. It was very good and occupied a large area of a pedestrianised area occupying several properties. Sitting outside enjoying watching the world go by in March is something I could get used to.

I opted for my favourite Beef carpaccio with pecorino on a bed of mixed leaves. Obviously I had to have a glass of wine! I returned later to sample the Cannoli as recommended by The Godfather. "Leave the gun, take the cannoli"

Coffee time

Lots of places to go for coffee from fast food Italian style in Pedros, a healthy looking juice bar or the well established traditional Spinnato.  I opted for cappuccino most days which the locals couldn't possibly mess up. Lavazza coffee seemed to be widely used. Served with a morning croissant which frequently had a light dusting of something sweet on the top.

Sunday Roast

The best ever roast chicken

If I had to pick a meal to eat every day forever it would be roast chicken and everything that should go with it. Obviously this includes the option of wine.

Risotto

Smoked haddock and pea risotto with fresh samphire

So I had a wee notion for some smoked haddock. After a much needed haircut I hot footed it down to the fishmonger for my purchase. The samphire was an added bonus. I was very impressed with the result

Days oot to the beach

North Berwick and St Andrews

Had a couple of unplanned trips to the beach this week.  Chilly and a bit windy but very nice. Ice cream from #Jannettas in #St Andrews has to be done. Obligatory visit to wine shop in # North Berwick #Lockett Bros. The dog Luna was well looked after. Good to see so many places are welcoming dogs these days

Dinner at home

Slow cooked duck legs

Decided on a new thing for me. Duck but not in orange sauce. Salad and fries ( I forgot to buy  potatoes!) some of the fries are a tad crispy but hey ho they were tasty.😂

Feeling like a tourist

Took a wee trip into town, took a donder down the Royal Mile and mingled with the tourists. It’s amazing how many visitors there are at this time of year. It’s a must see city for so many people. For locals it’s just home. Visited the Southern Cross cafe for the first time in years.  Had a late continental breakfast. Excellent as always.

Dinner at home

So I have been experimenting a wee bit the past couple of nights. Thursday night tried out some breaded loin of pork accompanied by some pickled apple, crisp green salad and mashed potatoes.                                                                                                                                Friday night is curry night. Homemade spicy potato and onion fritters, chicken tikka chilli masala and homemade nan. All very tasty and has to be topped with fresh coriander. Yummo

Cheeky wee overnight visit to the countryside

So my BFF and I decided on a last minute overnight stay at the tranquil Ballathie  House Hotel in Kinclaven, Perth and Kinross. Excellent visit to this superb hotel set in glorious grounds by the River Tay. Ideal for long walks with the dog, yes we took the dog and she was spoilt rotten. Fishing is also available by arrangement.  The room was  very comfortable spacious and the decor was ideal for a country house. The service was top notch and we were looked after very well by every member of staff.

 Ballathie Country House Hotel

We decided to push the boat out and have the half board option. 2 Rosette awards so we felt that we should. The dog was allowed in the bar and dining room so she met a few new friends. Dinner was top notch. The menu was fantastic, a really impressive selection to choose from. Really lived up  to its' 2 Rosettes. We managed to polish of the 5 courses without any difficulty. Obviously  we had to partake in  couple of glasses of wine.

Ballathie House Hotel

The food was all presented beautifully and cooked to perfection. There was only a fixed price menu available but it was worth the money taking into account the quality, presentation and service. We were served in a side room along a few other guests with dogs. We opted for coffee and petit fours in the cosy bar area.

Dinner for 2

Steak or sausage? Choices choices

Problem solved. Touiouse sausage #Lidl casserole one night followed by Scotch beef sirloin steake frite the next. #Morrisons. Excellent as always cooked by yours truly.

Catchup with friends

Meeting old friends post Covid

Finally met s couple of friends for the first time in over three years thanks to Covid. Normally we would meet up a couple of times a year. The favourite place is the Hawes Inn, South Queensferry which is directly below the Forth Bridge. Fine evening was had by all with fish and chips the order of the day for two of us but one of the party went all healthy with the Nourishing bowl with lamb kofte. We had to have a pudding obviously !.

Night oot in Broughty Ferry

Had a flying visit to see my BFF where we had a fantastic meal in the Ship Inn

Following the obligatory Porn Star Martini in the best cocktail bar in town #Bruach we headed down to #The Ship Inn. Following our usual mixed olives my BFF had the Sticky Chinese Pork Belly served with basmati and spring onion rice while I had the Tempura Sea Bass in a light korma batter served with chunky chips, mixed salad and mango chutney. No room for pudding so we had to head back to the pub.  It simply has to be done.

Cannae beat a bit of sausage and mash

Decided to go for the posh sort. Toulouse style sausage courtesy of Lidl. Served with onion gravy, mashed tatties and some carrots just to be healthy.

It seemed to got down well and obviously had to serve with a glass of vino from my wine club #Naked Wines

       HOME ALONE DINNER

Home alone recently so I decided to have a chick Milanaise for myself with pasta pomodro rather than fries and a crispy fresh salad just to be healthy. Obviously I had to have a cheeky wee glass of vino but couldn’t decide on red or white. You can guess what happened 😂

Post dinner cocktails at #Tiger Lily

Fabulous night out

So following the fabulous meal at Gusto rather than heading home like sensible girls should we nipped along the road for more cocktails. We proceeded to demolish a couple of Porn Star Martinis which were very tasty indeed. In my defence I was led astray.

Luckily we had done our retail therapy before partaking in the consumption of alcohol otherwise I may have spent even more money.

Cocktails and dinner with best friend Jane Macdougall

Had a fabulous dinner at gusto as always. Passionfruit Spritz for Jane and my favourite Aperol Spritz for me. We then had a delicious bowl of marinated olives and garlic dough petals with garlic butter to share. We both opted for the honey glazed duck breast served on a bed of creamy mash and cavalo nero { kale to you and me}Served with a red wine jus.

Following this we had a cheeky wee affrogato which really hit the spot.  Icecream with an espresso and Amaretto on the side

Alicante 2022

These are a few photos of my mini break  near Alicante last November. We were staying with my wonderful friends Ali and Den who took the awesome decision to go and live in  the small town of La Murada about 36 miles inland. They were perfect hosts and we were made to feel at home. We went to a fabulous beach side bar for breakfast on our arrival. Gomiz and an Indian restaurant in Catral called Bombay. Both lovely places with very  attentive staff and reasonably priced.

As a special treat I was taken to La Finca, Michelin Star for my birthday. We had the  stunning taster with wine menu. Best meal i have ever had. A must do thing for a one off treat.

#La Finca

Tasting menu with wine

Selection of the dishes we had from the tasting menu. Absolutely stunning selection. First class service and informative staff.

Friday nights' dinner. A bit of a North African/Spanish theme going on. Pork fillet marinated in a blend of Moroccan spices served in a sauce of mixed peppers, tomato and chickpeas. Served with a side of roast potatoes. I made use of the extra chickpeas and made a bowl of hummus. Oh and obviously we had to have a glass of wine. Sadly my mum passed away last year so making spicy food is so much easier as everyone likes it and there is no longer the requirement to tone the heat in some of the dishes.
